Job Shadowing at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital-Jefferson City

​If you are interested in a future career in healthcare, you may experience St. Mary’s Hospital through our Job Shadowing program. Participants must be 16 or older and can spend 4-6 hours in one participating department. 

St. Mary's Job Shadow Student program is for students age 16 and over who have an interest in pursuing a health care education and career. 

The program is designed to provide exposure to various departments and professions in order to enhance working knowledge of hospital operations, while maintaining the patient's safety, privacy and confidentiality and to preserve observer safety during operative and other procedures at St. Mary's Hospital.

The following guidelines apply:


  • 16 years or older, and parental permission required if under 18 years of age

  • Enrolled as a student in High School or College program

  • Current nursing or other allied health professions student

Requirements to Participate

  • Must submit an online application at least two weeks prior to their desired experience date  

  • Must not receive compensation for the observation experience

  • Observation only experience, no hands on and cannot perform any direct patient care

  • One shadowing per student per area

  • Must have completed all paperwork and forms (Program Packet and HIPAA Forms)

  • Must provide record of immunizations and flu vaccination

  • Must provide result of TB skin testing

  • Must wear assigned ID badge at all times while shadowing

Rules of Conduct

  • Once assigned, the student must sign in at Volunteer Services (or as directed) to obtain badge. Student must return badge and sign out at the end of the shadowing experience.

  • Dress is business casual unless otherwise instructed.  Unacceptable clothing: jeans, t-shirts, tank tops, open-toed shoes, tight pants or revealing clothes.  Students will not wear a lab coat or any clothing that might indicate they are a healthcare provider unless the preceptor/department manager determines that protective clothing is necessary for the safety of the patient or student (i.e., scrubs PPE equipment, etc.)

  • Students must behave in a professional manner at all times: courteous, prompt and reliable.  If at any time student behavior is not in compliance, the student may be asked to leave the premises.
